A Church that can Holistically Transform Society

Jesus made tremendous proclamations about the Church. He said: "....on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 16:18-19). There is a question we must ask ourselves today: Is that the kind of Church that can holistically transform society?

A Church that can Holistically Transform SocietyApostle Jan-Aage TorpThe task before us in the 21st Century is huge.

We are facing the gigantic task of transforming society!

Is that a task for individuals?

The answer is clearly NO.

This is a collective mandate, and a collective task!

The answer is the Church!

Foundation 1: The Triune Godhead

The foundation for the Church lies in the Triune Godhead: God is 3 and 1, simultaneously. God did not create in solitude. There was intimate communication and collaboration in the Triune Godhead: "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." (Genesis 1:26).

The Triune Godhead shows how God´s nature is: Creative and communicative and collaborative!

That is also the nature of the Church!

Christ "gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:11-12). From the Trinity, Christ gave his gifts (plural) to equip and build up the work and the body.

Foundation 2: The Creation Mandate

The creative nature of the Triune Godhead is obvious. He is the Creator God!

That means that the Church of the Triune Godhead has this creative vision and ability!

And God did not just create a little portion of our planet, but all of it!

God´s creative task was holistic!

This again lays the foundation for the holistic mandate and task of the Church!

We cannot talk rightly about transforming society without basing this on the Creation Mandate, which calls us to seek God´s image in all aspects of life and society. God said to His creation: Possess, subdue, multiply! The same mandate belongs to the Church today.

Shalom

The Hebrew word "shalom" means much more than "peace" in the sense of "absense of war". Shalom means to be whole, to be complete, to have physical and spiritual resources sufficient to one’s needs.

God is calling us today to convey His shalom to our continents and nations. Bringing His completeness and wholeness to nations, families and individuals. Based on our vibrant relationship with the Triune Godhead. And based on the vision, scope and power in His creative abilities.

The Church that has this relationship to HIM and His Creation Mandate can - and will - bring transformation to all spheres of society! Holistic transformation!
